The Economics of Wildlands Networks

Economy: derived from the Greek, meaning manager of a household; steward--O.E.D.

Wildlands Networks "The word wildlands has come to mean a range of natural and semi-natural landscapes. Network refers both to a network of people and communities who care about the land and are working together to protect (and use) it."--Michael Soulé

Two of our partner groups analyze and critique aspects of the economics impacting the stewardship of California's wildlands networks. The Institute for Sustainable Forestry explores the financial realities of private "semi-natural" lands, in particular corporate forest. These lands are critical for viable connectivity between core habitat areas, and for restoration of ecosystem function and process.

Friends of Yosemite Valley, watch-dogging the management of one of the world's treasured refuges and core habitat blocks, is concerned about how the people's desire for habitat protection and species recovery on public land is being distorted by commercial interests and bureaucratic imperatives. Both groups highlight the capabilities and necessity of "communities who care about the land."
