The 8th Annual Coho Confab will be hosted in the magnificent Smith River watershed on July 22-24, 2005. The specific site, co-host group(s), and additional information will be announced in the next issue of Branching Out and posted at the Trees Foundation website, www.treesfoundation.org. You can be sure that we will have an agenda full of the most popular workshops of prior Coho Confabs, as well as new exciting workshops. Tentative workshops include monitoring, land acquisition and land management, estuary issues, fish identification and more. We will offer an opportunity to get "out of the classroom and into the field" on the last major un-dammed river in California. Contact Trees Foundation for more information, and look for our regular Coho Confab Updates in Branching Out and on www.treesfoundation.org.

Although the Coho Confab was originally held solely within the Mattole River watershed, Trees Foundation has expanded the event to include other watersheds within our service region--the North Coast. Along with the Salmonid Restoration Federation, Trees Foundation invites another group to co-host the event in their home watershed. Last year, Trees Partner SPAWN co-hosted the event in the lovely Samuel P. Taylor State Park, in the Lagunitas Creek watershed in Marin County. It was a well-attended and wonderful success.

In 2004, Trees Foundation introduced the first annual Reddstart: Healthy Watersheds MiniGrant available to participants of the Confab. The purpose of the Reddstart MiniGrant is to aid a Coho Confab participant in the implementation of a restoration project that will benefit native salmon or steelhead in their home watershed. Many interesting proposals from a variety of watersheds were received by the application deadline on November 1. Trees will evaluate the proposals and award the grant by January 1, 2005. The selected restoration project will be announced in the next Branching Out.

Participants of the July 2005 Confab will be eligible for the next Reddstart: Healthy Watersheds MiniGrant to advance a project in their home watersheds.
