Donor Mac Program a Great Success!

by Scott LaMorte of Trees Foundation
July 17, 2000

We at Trees have been very pleased by the recent success of the Donor Mac program! We?ve had more than twenty Macs (and one PC!) donated to our community, and most of those we?ve been able to configure into useful working systems for our more computer-needy affiliates and ad-hoc activists.

And the program just keeps growing!

We?ve recently come into a collection of Mac monitors as well as a shipment of keyboards; if you received a bare-bones Mac already, contact us about getting these necessary peripherals.

Where?s this program going?
We hope to expand it further, to the point of eventually having a little ?computer store? set up at Trees, with complete ready-to-go configured systems just waiting for an active human to adopt them. And this won?t be just for the computerless; feel free to trade in your older system for a better one, and we?ll pass on that older Mac to someone with more basic needs. We also are testing and cleaning up donated accessories such as modems, scanners, and removable media drives.

Trees hopes to expand the line of equipment as well, first by providing Windows equipment, especially for the folks in the community that need GIS computers.
We?ve had one PC laptop donated already, and other office equipment such as fax machines, copiers, and telephones would be appropriate as well.

Our biggest limitation with this program is space. It?s been a huge impact on our tiny little office, with hardware stored under everyone?s desk and stacked up in corners, and parts and wires and test equipment strewn across most flat surfaces. Bear with us as we either find a way to make this program work in the space we have, or move in to a larger space.

Feel free to contact us regarding donating or receiving computer equipment! Donations are tax-deductible, and applications for equipment are accepted from anyone working within our mission statement of California North Coast environmental action.
