Salmonid Restoration Federation - May, 2001 Update

The Salmonid Restoration Federation (SRF) held its
Nineteenth Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference in
Chico in early March. Highlights this year included: a
first-time-ever workshop on managing fire and fuels
(one of six workshops), two very successful field
tours, and a session on dam removal, all of which had
a Central Valley emphasis, the host region for this
year?s conference. The highlight for many was the
keynote address by Zeke Grader, reflecting on the
state of salmonid restoration at midlife. This
included a sobering wake-up call to us all in a time
of perceived energy shortage and the resulting threat
to water and fish.

Salmonid Habitat Restoration Field School will hold
two sessions on ?Salmon and Steelhead-Friendly Road
Construction and Maintenance Practices.? The first
session this fall will be held in Quincy, California,
then on the north coast next spring. Courses will be
open to heavy equipment operators, rural subdivision
road managers, and others managing rural roads.
SRF was invited to Portland to provide the National
Marine Fisheries Service with detailed information
concerning the costs, methods, and regulatory hurdles
faced by instream restoration practitioners. This is
important for the federal government in developing
estimates at the stream reach, sub-basin, watershed,
and ESA sales for recovery funding. We were able to
compare technical approaches and costs with
restoration practitioners from Oregon and Washington.
We are also meeting with the multi-state For the Sake
of the Salmon organization to work out complementary
efforts.
