Bay Area Coalition for Headwaters - BACH Update

The Bay Area Coalition for Headwaters (BACH), in addition to its on-going public education, media work, activist support and organizing, is pursuing two new tracks, market campaign research, and lobbying for restoration funding.
BACH joined wilderness and public lands advocates in Washington, DC in a lobby effort to ensure full funding for the management plans for the Headwaters Reserve and other lands in the National Landscape Conservation System. The NLCS was established in 2000 to encompass lands under Bureau of Land Management (BLM) management with outstanding cultural, ecological, and scientific values, and includes many of the Clinton-designated National Monuments.

BACH has been intimately involved in the BLM management planning process for the Headwaters Reserve, purchased from Maxxam/Pacific Lumber Company in 1999. The Reserve has tremendous potential to provide critical habitat for the marbled murrelet and Coho salmon if the proposed stream and forest restoration projects stay on track.Restoration, including the removal of logging roads, will allow nearly 4500-acres of cut-over lands to regain old growth forest characteristics over time and become wildlife habitat as well as a crucial buffer for the core ancient grove. The final Management Plan is about to be released, and full implementation of much-needed restoration depends upon full funding.

On an entirely different track, our market campaign research is identifying ways to harness the outrage--felt far beyond Humboldt County--at Maxxam/Pacific Lumber's blatant attempt to unseat a democratically elected official this past year. The ultimate goal of any market campaign is to foster responsibility in purchasing on the part of retailers, and to support thoughtful and ethical choices by consumers. We are tracking the chain of custody of redwood coming from Pacific Lumber's Humboldt County mills and pressing for a recognition among purchasers that the marketing of redwood, unless it comes from a small, sustainable operation, is a practice that belongs in our past.
