Mattole Restoration Council - May, 2001 Update

The Mattole Restoration Council continues to focus on
our new Good Roads, Clear Creeks Program, an effort to
reduce sedimentation to the Mattole River through
cooperative projects in Mill Creek, the Mid-Mattole
area, and the Mattole headwaters area.

In mid-April, we hosted a training workshop in
Petrolia in sediment delivery site inventory.
Participants included heavy equipment operators, local
ranchers and landowners, and potential field
technicians to work on future projects. By training
local residents in inventory and treatment techniques,
we are developing a corps of ?watershed paramedics?
for the Mattole. The training was funded in
partnership with the Department of Fish and Game and
with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
This summer we will be undertaking several road
removal and sediment delivery site treatment projects.
We favor these projects as a way to help landowners
prepare for the upcoming Mattole River TMDL, scheduled
for completion in 2002. We feel that our
locally-driven cooperative approach will prove to be
highly effective over the long term.

If you would like to join the MRC or find out more

education, GIS, and forest practices review, or visit
