As spring heats up into summer, Sanctuary Forest finds itself undergoing growth and change on several exciting fronts. We welcome two new staff members to our team. Noah Levy recently joined us as Program Assistant for Lands, and Marylou Scavarda has rejoined us as our new Office Manager. The new faces follow our recent move to a new office in the Whitethorn Construction complex, and we invite our friends and supporters to drop by and visit us there.
We're also very pleased to announce a significant addition of new lands to the Upper Mattole River and Forest Cooperative. Now nearly complete, our acquisition of four properties totaling over 450 acres (much of it owned by Barnum Timber) takes us one big step closer to protecting salmon habitat in the Mattole Headwaters. We thank the sellers as well as the Wildlife Conservation Board and the Department of Fish and Game, whose funding made possible these valuable additions.
Meanwhile, the road decommissioning and restoration project we began last summer is gearing up for its second year. On May 29 we held a Public Meeting to review and discuss this winter's monitoring of last year's work. Based on these results, and on other helpful feedback received from the community, we hope to complete the remainder of the road removal and upgrading this summer, followed by monitoring and maintenance to ensure its success.
Finally, we congratulate Ambria Renner-Cox, Brittny Anderson, Alicia Forden and Rosemary Georgeson, the winners of our eighth annual scholarship competition. These four high school seniors impressed us with their dedicated work in support of their communities and the environment. We wish them the best of luck in college and in their future careers!
