Fire Safty and Water Flow
Long and sunny days have finally arrived in the Mattole. However, alongside the nice weather comes increased wildfire risk and dropping water levels in the river. This summer, the Mattole Restoration Council (MRC) will work to reduce hazardous fuel loads and to keep the river flowing.
In partnership with the Lower Mattole Fire Safe Council (LMFSC) and the Sacramento Regional Foundation, the MRC will complete three fuel reduction projects that were identified in the Lower Mattole Fire Plan: one in Petrolia, one along Wilder Ridge Road, and a third along Panther Gap Road. All three projects will clear dense brush and small diameter trees to reduce fire danger to homes or community assets. To complete fire safety planning in the Mattole watershed, the MRC and the Southern Humboldt Fire Safe Council will develop a fire plan for the upper Mattole watershed. These projects should encourage private landowners towards fire safety.
On the river side of things, the MRC will continue outreach and education work about the water conditions in the Mattole River above Thorn Junction. During the past several years, summertime flow has gone subsurface, causing great community concern about juvenile salmonids. The MRC is working with local residents to offer home water system consultations, demonstrations of water-efficient devices, and fact sheets to help residents learn
how they can reduce their impact on the river. Please call the Whitethorn office for more information at 986-1078.
