The Institute for Sustainable Forestry is continuing its work to foster locally based, sustainable forestry in our area. Recognizing that there is too often more rhetoric than reality in the sustainable forestry world, we've been working to promote a more comprehensively integrated local wood products industry. This has involved supporting locally owned progressive businesses such as the NeighborWood mill in Piercy. We recently contracted with NeighborWood, a business that salvages urban woods from south of here and turns these "waste" products into beautiful flooring, furniture, and other high value wood products. Our contract will provide the opportunity for local community members to bring their locally derived saw logs to the mill in Piercy to be processed into dimensional lumber. We're also in the process of contracting with Whitethorn Construction for the lease of our molder, a machine that can turn basic lumber products into fine molded products such as windows and floor trim. As with NeighborWood, our agreement with Whitethorn will allow for local folks to bring their locally derived wood to be turned into beautiful high-end products.
As usual, ISF continues to provide workshops to landowners, restorationists, contractors, loggers, and foresters on all aspects of restoration and sustainable land use. All of these and other efforts are intended to promote a comprehensive network of local community members making use of local, sustainably derived wood products. We believe this is most effective means of promoting a healthy forest and rural community. Feel free to stop into our new office in Garberville right next to the 707 Restaurant on Redwood Drive. Or call us at 923-7004. We're open and happy to hear from you.
