As Pacific Lumber (PL) increased its aggressive response to forest defenders, so did BACH's media work become more aggressive. A flurry of press releases went out to national and local media as PL-contracted climbers moved in on the tree-sits in March. BACH's director spent time in Humboldt in March and April, and collected compelling video and still images of the tree-sit extractions to make available to media.
Much the same information provided to media was simultaneously broadcast to other groups and our own large constituency through e-mail, events, and information tables. Recently we've tabled at events ranging from the People's Park 34th Anniversary to the Planning and Conservation League's Legislative Symposium, as well as our own events. Our tables feature informative displays, fact sheets, and a binder of press releases, news clips and photos, as well as sample letters on forest bills.
Our outreach has yielded hundreds of letters to legislators and dozens of letters to Maxxam and PL about their anti-environmentalist smear campaign. We are now targeting Attorney General Bill Lockyer with a demand that he support Humboldt county D.A. Paul Gallegos' courageous environmental fraud lawsuit against PL, and many people have already written letters informed by our fact sheet to Lockyer.
In our collaborative efforts with rural groups, we have distributed our media lists, collaborated on legal strategy (particularly with respect to the harassment lawsuits against activists), and generated support for activist efforts. We have also lent support to help a new Maxxam watchdog group in Houston get off the ground.
To access our legislative fact sheet, sample letters, or our pithy and focussed action alerts, we invite people to join our listserve through our website or by emailing symp@lists.riseup.net. We will be posting news soon about the BLM's Headwaters Preserve Final Management Plan (expected in July) and its public comment period. Stay tuned!
