We?ve been extremely busy the last nine months completing some large-scale restoration projects that were funded by the Dept. of Fish and Game SB271 funds as well as HRCD 319H funding. We are happy to say all the projects held up well in the big storms. We upgraded a bunch of funky old culverts and added rolling dips. We put an old haul road to bed in the headwaters of the creek and built a number of in-stream grade controls both in the headwaters and the Bill?s Hill fork of the creek. We also built a few in-stream log structures, and did riprap bank stabilization in two locations.
We all learned a lot. Shanon Taliafero is fast becoming one of the most highly skilled excavator operators in the county. Tim Metz is gaining skills as a heavy equipment operator along with his many other talents. Perry Lincoln showed me how to use pry bars to move big boulders by myself. I can?t tell you how empowering that skill is! Richard Gienger?s projects are visually beautiful as well as structurally sound. We would like to find a statue of Buddha or Kwan Yin to place by the creek at one of Richard?s sites. If anyone knows of one going cheap let us know.
Last week we finished planting 4,000 Redwood and 6,000 Doug fir in the riparian area of Seely Creek. The best news is on December 24th and 25th, 18 large chinook and two coho were seen spawning in a 100? reach of the creek, and we know a bunch more went up the creek. That hadn?t happened for along time and it gives us hope. Lastly I want to thank all the great crew that worked with us the past year?the restorationists and equipment operators: Terry, Casey, Perry, Barry, Mark, Bill, Shanon, Tim,; the main tree planting crew: Nate, Josh, Will, Jeremy, Elijah and Dave; and all of the volunteers
