There is no shortage of conservation organizations on the North Coast. This diversity is a testament to the complex environmental issues we face. Yet despite the numerous efforts to enhance and help our forests and fisheries there is always plenty of work to do. When we combine our varied skills towards a common goal, larger results are possible.
The Mattole River and Range Partnership is one such combination of forces. During the last year, the Mattole Restoration Council brought together other Mattole watershed conservation groups to develop a suite of projects designed to address the recommendations of the North Coast Watershed Assessment Program?s (NCWAP) Mattole River Watershed Assessment Report.
Over the next 18 months, the Mattole Restoration Council, in collaboration with other local conservation and restoration organizations, will develop a Mattole Watershed Plan to prioritize future restoration work. Guided by a Technical Advisory Committee of local restoration practitioners and scientists, the Partnership will work on reforestation, fisheries monitoring and recovery, fire hazard reduction, water conservation education, conservation easements, and training local residents in restoration skills. The Partnership will work with cooperative landowners to accomplish restoration goals. Combining all of these activities enables Mattole watershed groups to address more complex issues than if they were working alone.
