communities, the MEC is a mechanism for people to get
involved in stopping the plunder of our Earth. Over
the past few months, MEC resources, facilities, staff,
and volunteers have helped people take action on real
quality-of-life and healthy biosphere matters, like
training them to read, ground-truth, and comment on
timber harvest plans; carrying out nonviolent training
in preparation for the possible civil disobedience
over the spraying of chemicals; forcing a special
public hearing of the Planning Commission on a quarry
site; developing the county grading ordinance;
participating in mass demonstrations on democracy and
globalization; presenting educational forums; and
researching and producing written material.
This fiscal year?s budget is prepared and waiting for
board approval. The task of balancing income demands
requires considerable time and energy from many of us
who would rather be doing a training or organizing a
demonstration. We have an active grant-writing
committee this year and hope to increase that source
of funding to eliminate frequent labor-and
time-intensive fundraisers which provide only a drop
in the bucket of monthly expenses. We intend to
increase membership through a door canvass and by
enlisting our current members in recruitment.
We continue developing a broad organizational base of
people and group decision-making structure, and we
also sometimes struggle with communication systems and
conflicting perspectives. But the dynamic is
enlivening and provides each of us the opportunity to
figure out how to disagree better and work together
better, with renewed commitment to the well-being of
our activist resource center.
