Center for Environmental Economic Development - November, 2002 Update

The drive to develop our region seems relentless. Property values are headed up, new homes appearing, population slowly increasing, and highways are widening. In the face of this, watershed protection includes offering a sustainable alternative to development-as-usual, while continuing the ever-important work of ecological defense. The Center for Environmental Economic Development (CEED) continues its work on such alternatives, through catalyzing efforts to build ecologically sound and socially just communities.
Our Sustainable Humboldt project continues to push for restoration funding at the county level, and is examining funding approaches in neighboring counties. Working in cooperation with the North Coast Initiative, we are creating a watershed projects "grid,? to organize restoration information for at-a-glance analysis of job potential and ecological need. We continue to hold countywide meetings on sustainable forestry, agriculture, energy, and sustainable communities. We've begun an economic analysis of road removal projects throughout the national forest system, in preparation for recommending policy changes. New projects in the design phase include plans for countywide heritage corridors, sustainable-energy implementation, and a model environmental-technology building to highlight livable community techniques.

CEED's vision -- that sustainable communities are possible, with adequate political will, funding, and community effort ? may be resonating around the County these days. More and more, we hear talk of "restoration" in local economic development circles, those who have long pursued the old-fashioned ?business-as-usual ? models. Restoration is being more widely defined to include sustainable energy technologies, historic preservation, ecological tourism, and more. Organizing for social change and new policy alternatives is a long-term process, but one that shows results over time.
