Eel River Salmon Restoration Project - November, 2002 Update

The restoration practices that the Eel River Salmon Restoration Project (ERSRP) has been involved with for nearly 20 years are still providing salmon and steelhead habitat today. Our log-jam, modification- related fish-passage project left wood in the channel and allowed access and successful spawning in the upper reaches of Leggett Creek by steelhead, which are currently rearing in woody water-filled pools. The Blue Goo Slide sediment basin and the forest that we planted on the slopes of the landslide are still preventing pool-filling sediments from entering Redwood Creek. This year we constructed new log-boulder scour structures in Miller Creek to provide even more fish habitat for years to come.

We recently completed road-drainage upgrades to the road that leads to our small-scale hatchery. We are completing general hatchery upgrades and repairs to our water system, hatch-box incubators, and rearing ponds. We are currently visualizing the winter storms that will bring the rain to swell our local streams and once again bring back the salmon to their spawning grounds, as well as offer us the opportunity to gather a few salmon eggs for our hatchery and the classrooms.

The ?Salmon in the Classroom Program?, now called the ?California Aquarium Education Program? (CAEP), is gearing up for another season. ERSRP has been involved with this wonderful K-12 educational opportunity since 1986. Last year 22 classes from Garberville to Fortuna reared Chinook salmon eggs from fish spawned on Redwood Creek and released them as fry back into Redwood Creek. ERSRP was able to offer equipment and support that allowed this program to be offered in a total of 70 classrooms. The Cereus Fund grant that we received has allowed us to expand our educational network and produce an educational resource guide that we plan on posting to our website in the near future.
