CDF ignored the public and the experts. It proposes a management plan that will clearcut half the forest and the Board of Forestry wants to approve CDF?s plan at its November meeting. To save our public forest from destructive logging, the Campaign, in coalition with Forests Forever, has filed suit challenging the EIR. This suit will be extremely expensive, costing more than $80,000.
While we must continue to work to save our forest, we take great satisfaction at what we have achieved so far. CDF has been stopped from initiating any new destructive logging plans in Jackson Forest for three years now. At the same time, those supporting restoration of Jackson State have grown from a few dozen to many thousands. Most importantly, we have had an incredible impact on the terms of discussion about the future of Jackson State Forest.
When CDF recently announced adoption of a final management plan for Jackson State Forest, CDF Director Andrea Tuttle trumpeted the plan as the cornerstone of a state commitment to ?create for the future the largest block of old-growth forest between San Francisco and Humboldt County.? We must now hold the State to its words and ensure that Jackson State Redwood Forest will provide recreation, inspiration, and wildlife habitat for generations to come.
