After five years of struggle in Ecuador, with an oil pipeline swiftly approaching the incredible wilderness, AFI has completed a draft proposal creating the ?Amazonian Tropical Wilderness Area: Yasuni-Pa?acocha-Cuyabeno-La Paya-Gueppi Conservation Corridor.? This proposed corridor will be a consolidation, expansion, and integration of existing reserves to create a 3-million hectare ?management unit.? AFI is confident that this proposal will have massive habitat and cultural protection implications and will introduce wildlands planning to the extremely threatened northwestern corner of the core of the Amazon. Check the AFI web page, and stay tuned for exciting updates on this incredible project.
In Chile, AFI is part of a coalition that is working on the ?Sendero Chile,? the Chilean Crest Trail. The first eco-tourist Mountain Lodge has been completed. El Eccco Caf? in Puerto Monte is also now up and running. It will function as a great resource for travelers, and as an information and education center in the hub of town. The Caf? also hosts a radio station. In Cochomo, the injunction is still holding and the proposed road through the wilderness has been stopped. AFI recently attended meetings with the Chilean Consulate regarding forest-protection issues throughout Chile.
Finally, AFI is spearheading the California?s North Coast?s public outreach and education work on the Federal Wilderness Bill that seeks protection for California?s remaining un-roaded public lands.
