In California, AFI?s North Coast Range Project (NCRP?formerly Coast Range Connectivity Project) has been building a rural-urban coalition in support of public trust lands in our region. NCRP has established the Community Wilderness Alliance to work closely with the California Wild Heritage Campaign, California Wilderness Coalition, Northcoast Environmental Center, Legacy-The Landscape Connection, and others to introduce rural and urban recreationalists to north coast roadless areas and to educate people about the need for their protection. Since April AFI has led more than a dozen weekend ?show-me? tours into over 300,000 public unroaded acres that qualify for wilderness designation. This series of day and weekend hikes will continue through the fall. To find out more, contact Wilderness Educator Lynn Ryan at 707-923-4475.
AFI is working with EPIC and other public lands advocates on mis-management issues in the southern Six Rivers and Mendocino National Forests. Of particular concern are the Big Bar Complex timber sale and the new Fire Management Plan, which would sacrifice millions of acres of public lands in the dubious name of fire protection.
AFI invites the community to visit our office in Redway. Anyone wishing to volunteer, attend a hike or make a donation should visit the office or call the number listed above.
